Boetti - The world is art

Three international museums of the Reina Sofia of Madrid, Tate Modern of London and Moma of New York class celebrate Alighiero Boetti, one of the most poetic and interesting Italian artists of the XXI Century. The Alighiero Boetti/Game Plan exhibition, curators Lynne Cooke, Mark Godfrey and Christian Rattemeyer, reconstructs the artist’s path that began with Arte Povera, soon leaving it behind to embark on a personal and extraordinary search. Boetti’s works, on display in one of the most important international exhibitions dedicated to an Italian of the XX century, tell the fascinating story of a man and his ambitions and inspirations but also about the atmospheres of an era.

Boetti realises works that establish a direct relationship with reality from where he attempts to make the pulsing force and vital energy emerge. He is one of the first to make the passage from the object of art to look at to the work that involves the spectator, his or her sensitivity, perceptive skills and intelligence.

The section of the exhibition dedicated to geographical maps handmade by the women of Kabul has a great impact. One of these is Mappa (1971/1972) – one of the first tapestries embroidered in Afghanistan, depicting a political map of 1969 with decorative patterns of the flags inside the national borders. In this case Boetti confronts geography intended as a concrete space. His work is conceptual but always connected to the dimension of reality.

«The embroidered map is of the utmost beauty», he said in 1974, «I had nothing to do with choice as regards to this work: the world is as it is and I didn’t draw it, the flags are the flags and I didn’t draw them. When you get the basic idea, the concept, all the rest is already there – there is nothing to choose». And with this same philosophy he decided to tell about them in a book, “simply” listing them, the 1000 longest rivers in the world or to glue – in all the possible combinations - differently coloured stamps and postcards depicting the Mole Antonelliana that he sent to keep a track of times and places. In fact, one of the most fascinating aspects of Boetti is his ability to reinvent new worlds and stories starting from clues about his life. And this is why this artist, who died in 1994, is still so greatly loved and celebrated.
